TERRIFIC TRIP TO TACUGAMA

Leo and Alex take uncle Cor and his grandkids on a memorable outing to the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a place dedicated to the conservation of critically endangered Western chimpanzees. This sanctuary gives a unique opportunity for visitors to Sierra Leone to witness these magnificent creatures up close, gaining a deeper understanding of their plight and the challenges they face in the wild.

As they explore the sanctuary, they learn about the threats that these chimpanzees encounter in their natural habitat, such as habitat loss, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. It's a sobering yet enlightening experience that highlights the importance of conservation efforts in protecting these incredible animals.

Reflecting on their own encounters with baby chimps and vervet monkeys, at Mama Mayila's Cradle within the park's buffer zone, searching for food after losing their parents to bushmeat hunting, Leo, Alex, and their companions are reminded of the critical role that sanctuaries like Tacugama play in rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured animals.

After a day filled with learning and exploration, they concluded their outing with a delicious pizza feast, savoring the moment and cherishing the memories created during their visit to the sanctuary. This experience left a lasting impact on them, inspiring a newfound appreciation for wildlife conservation and a commitment to protecting the natural world for future generations.

Situated in the protected Western District Peninsula National Park, founded in 1995 where the team rescue and rehabilitate orphaned Western chimpanzees, caring for and rehabilitating nearly 100 chimpanzees on-site before releasing them back intp the protected national park
