HOPE SAKUMA: GROWING FOR SEED

The Hope Sakuma team take a well-earned break, resting int he shade as Mohamed Jica, Morlai, Pa Aruna and new recruit, Abdul set about extending the vegetable beds and developing new ones, so far, an outstanding 84 lovely straight rows of rich, black Sanda soil all planted up with pepper and okra underplanted with cucumber, pumpkin and watermelon - produce that's tough-skinned and easy to transport - but the team plan on saving seed for replanting even more during the upcoming rainy seaon, when most farmers often rely on just their rice crops to see them through even though ariny season makes for some very plump crops indeed!

Over the month, the hard-working Hope Sakuma team fill their week diging over more of the farms' paddies, repairing bunds and making heaped rows for planting some quick growing cassava - ready to harvest in just four months - improving land productivity and helping break up the soil in time for planting rainy season rice!
