HOPE SAKUMA: CLEARING PADDIES FOR PLANTING

Mo Bangura

The Hope Sakuma boys diligently brush and dig over the last of the paddies, meticulously preparing the paddies for planting, repairing the bunds and irrigation channels to ensure each paddy receives adequate water. The boys work with a sense of purpose and teamwork, their movements synchronized as they clear the remnants of last season's growth, ensuring that the soil is ready to support the next generation of rice plants and helping to extend the farms' rice harvest into the new year.

By strategically digging the previous year's paddies sequentially manner, the farm allows each plot a full year to recuperate and replenish its nutrients. This process is essential for maintaining the health of the soil, as it draws on the natural fertility of the swamp which provides a rich source of organic matter and minerals. This restorative period is vital for ensuring that the subsequent rice crops can thrive and yield bountiful harvests without the use of chemical fertilizers.

Moreover, by spreading out the work over the course of the year, the farm can manage its labor force more effectively. This approach not only makes the harvest more manageable each month but also allows the farm to operate with fewer farmers, who can then focus on working more productively. Each farmers' contribution is vital, as their efforts collectively lead to more sustainable farming practices and the promise of a bountiful harvest.
