WATTLE AND DAUB A HAND WOVEN HOME

Mo Bangura

A hand woven home? Yup. This is basket weaving on a grand scale and in very traditional way.

Hope Sakuma's second accomodation hut moves on a few thousand years from our first huts' simple stick structure to a very traditional 'wattle and daub' construction used for more than 6,000 years and still being built in Sierra Leone today by skilled artisan weavers and plasterers of the Wurreh Line Fula tribe.

This beautiful little piece of history is being made by our Fulanese friends and if we're not mistaken, we can see little Miss Numu helping the Fula ladies plaster or daub the wattle - the interwoven latice of wooded strips - inside the hut while the gentlemen weave and plaster the low wall for the compound.
