A TONNE OF HONEY!

Mo Bangura

Here's Foday with one of the hives we saw being woven by hand and covered with dung back in December and then placed high up in the rainforest trees in January. Now it's harvest time in Sanda Magbolontor and time for the hives to be collected and the honey to be sustainably harvested without harming the bees.

These expert Limba beekeepers, who've harvested honey for generations from our rainforest bees, now harvested sustainably without using traditional smoke that can kill these essential pollinators.

Later in the year our Honey FBO have agreed to weave extra hives for our cashew trees to aid pollination as they mature and to train some women from each village how to harvest the honey sustainably.

Meanwhile, volunteer Hassan makes the trip from Freetown to Makatay with the first 40 bata to hand over to Foday, our honey FBO chair and Hassan learns there's another 3 honey villages wanting to join Hope Sakuma! These forty bata will be filled up with 800 litres of the glorious sweet sticky stuff - weight-wise that's over a tonne of honey!
