A FERRYMAN'S PLEA!

Mo Bangura

You’ve got to admit the Mabanta River crossing is a beautiful sight! But there's something missing from this bucolic pastoral view. As Mo and Hassan and Abdulai Omaru Sheriff discover, the ferry lays upturned still, the dock in ruins, more than a week on from a recent storm.

The Mabanta Crossing is the main route in and out of Sanda Magbolonto Chiefdom and the ferrymen confirm the lack of a ferry at this essential crossing is causing real trouble for citizens - without this major crossing it's difficult to get supplies in and for farmers to get their produce out of the Chiefdom - and they plead with authorities to repair the ferry urgently and restore their livelihoods. Ingeniously, the ferrymen suggest a bridge, as during rainy season the Chiefdom is often cut off from Port Loko when the river swells and the ferry can't operate and they would be very happy to man the toll.

So it's crossing by canoe - motorbike included – for our intrepid trio as they make their way to Manays and then onto Masanah to see the start of Hope Sakuma's boli land harvest.
