DAY 2: FREETOWN FLOODS, MUDSLIDE SURVIVORS

Mo Bangura

Yesterdays' devasting mudslide in Regent, Freetown, Sierra Leone leaves 300+ now confirmed dead - two thirds women and children - many hundreds unaccounted for and and many hundred's of children homeless and in need of immediate help.

This morning, 7 days of National Mourning were declared with immediate effect. This afternoon the Hope team and Society for Climate Change Communication (the team of voulnteers who broke the story internationally) made our first delivery of water and seven bags of rice gratefully received from Marenka, Hart voor Africa and donations received overnight.

Reports are coming in that communities on the other side of the mountain are affected, as well as parts of Freetown. Registrations for affected people are taking place at 3 centres, coordinated by the Office of National Security but there are numerous people overmwhelming the camps, people who need to eat but who are not survivors of the mudslide.

Food is cooked collectively at the camp for survivors at Regent where our friends, Concern for Deprived Welfare Association (CoDWelA), have 4 social workers on the ground since yesterday.

Shelter and sanitation situation is unclear. The immediate need is clean water, food and safe bed spaces for homeless children.

Any offers of safe bed spaces for children received will be passed to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children's Affairs who are coordinating placements from those currently registering.

Please help us do more. Donate here:
