HER Choice: End Child Marriage NOW in Sierra Leone

15 of our Girls from Moa Wharf and Mama Mayila’s Cradle had the chance to meet some high ranking VIPs at yesterday's campaign launch END CHILD MARRIAGE NOW, including the Vice-President and the campaigns’ Patron, the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

REPORTING BACK & SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE

After the launch event Dee was eager to return to Mama Mayila’s Cradle and tell the other Girl’s all about the exciting day and Dee repeated the powerful story one of the Girls told at the event telling the other children:

“Parents are traitors to their girls’ futures when they arrange the marriage of their child.

Paramount Chiefs betray them more when they give permission for the child marriage to take place and Pastors and Imams betray them for a third time when they give their blessing to the marriage of a girl child.”

The girls talked about what child marriage would mean to them with Mama Mayila and then they made some posters for the campaign:

Dee: “My choice: I am a girl with ambition – say no to child marriage”

Macy: “My choice: I want to be educated not a child Bride”

Sophie: “My choice: Education is my focus, not child marriage.”

Mary: “Mama, Papa I am a child, not yet a woman. My choice: Say no to Child Marriage.”

THESE GIRLS CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING!

When we think back to where these Girls were just a year ago and how far they have come - from the pan-bodies in Moa Wharf to an event with the Vice President and the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the African Union and the United Nations it is possible to imagine these Girls and every Girl being able to achieve anything they put their minds to given the right support and encouragement!
